German Unity Day

03 October 2022

Celebrated with a student assembly, reunification projects, and a reenactment of the fall of the Berlin Wall with Consul General Sybille Pfaff

With the Day of German Unity, a special piece of unity has also returned to the German International School Dubai: For the first time after the recent Covid loosenings, a large student assembly took place in the school cafeteria decorated with German colors.

To celebrate the day, the assembled secondary school students sang the national anthem together. Principal Michael Lummel was thrilled with the beautiful picture he saw in front of the stage during his speech. "It's nice that after two and a half years of waiting, we all get to gather again today. Today is a very special day and I am happy that we are celebrating German Unity Day in this way," said Michael Lummel.

In the kindergarten and in Primary School activities were carried out in which the children learned a lot about Germany and the federal states. Under the Head of of teacher Walaa Tawfik, the 5th grade ethics group supported the Seahorse group in kindergarten in a playful way with a Germany map puzzle and a creative wall building game. In addition, many Germany flags were painted with finger paints.

The day also took on a special meaning in the lessons at Secondary School : History department head Carolin Schemenau worked with the tenth graders on a project about reunification. The student students took over the lessons for the first three hours with discussion rounds, a quiz and role plays.

As a final highlight, a contemporary witness panel discussion with Consul General Sybille Pfaff and Headmaster Michale Lummel, as well as teacher Marcus Brösgen from the extended school management and DISD mother Dunya Poetschke awaited the student*innen. Mr. Brösgen and Ms. Poetschke, who both grew up in the GDR, shared their experiences in vivid descriptions. For the student*innen it was exciting to hear how the fall of the wall was experienced.

Afterwards, Consul General Sybille Pfaff experienced a wall of a special kind in the DISD kindergarten. The children had built a wall out of brightly painted shoe boxes. In this way, they were introduced to German reunification history in a playful way. Together with Consul General Pfaff, they were then allowed to make the wall fall.
