Day of German Unity

October 03, 2022

The celebrations included a student assembly, projects on reunification and a re-enactment of the fall of the Berlin Wall with Consul General Sybille Pfaff

German Unity Day also brought a special piece of unity back to the German International School Dubai: for the first time since the recent Covid lockdown, a large student assembly was held in the school canteen, which was decorated in German colors.

To celebrate the day, the assembled secondary school students sang the national anthem together. Principal Michael Lummel was delighted with the beautiful picture that presented itself to him during his speech in front of the stage. "It's great that we can all gather again today after two and a half years of waiting. Today is a very special day and I am delighted that we are celebrating German Unity Day in this way," said Michael Lummel.

Activities were carried out in the kindergarten and Primary School where the children learned a lot about Germany and the federal states. Under the Head of teacher Walaa Tawfik, the 5th grade ethics group supported the seahorse group in the kindergarten in a playful way with a Germany map puzzle and a creative wall building game. In addition, many German flags were painted with finger paints.

The day also took on a special significance in lessons at the Secondary School : history teacher Carolin Schemenau developed a project on reunification with the tenth graders. The student took over the first three lessons with discussion rounds, a quiz and role-playing games.

The final highlight for the student was a panel discussion with Consul General Sybille Pfaff and Head of School Michale Lummel, as well as teacher Marcus Brösgen from the extended school management and DISD mother Dunya Poetschke. Mr. Brösgen and Ms. Poetschke, who both grew up in the GDR, shared their experiences in vivid descriptions. It was exciting for the student to hear how they experienced the fall of the Wall.

Afterwards, Consul General Sybille Pfaff experienced a special kind of wall fall at the DISD kindergarten. The children had built a wall out of colorfully painted shoe boxes. This is a playful way of introducing them to the history of German reunification. Together with Consul General Pfaff, they were then allowed to bring down the wall.
