DISD junior executives impress at Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN)

Awards for Luca Erkol and Hala Hassan

From January 10 to 13, 23 student from grades 9, 10 and 11 successfully took part in the renowned Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN). This international educational program enables young leaders from all over the world to learn about the principles and working methods of the United Nations in a simulation. In doing so, they develop essential skills such as negotiation, critical thinking and public speaking.

With over 820 participants from more than 30 nations, including schools from North and South America, our student impressed with their exceptional commitment and professional expertise. Of particular note was the outstanding performance of Luca Erkol and Hala Hassan from class 10c, who received the prestigious Diplomatic Commendation Award. This award recognizes delegates who stand out for their leadership, diplomacy and negotiation skills.

"Their outstanding commitment has not only expressed their exceptional talent, but also fills our school with great pride," summed up the accompanying teacher Ms. Willgrass.

The conference required the participants to deal intensively with current global challenges and to develop creative, sustainable solutions in the form of resolutions. The DISD students not only demonstrated analytical thinking, but also teamwork and intercultural competence by working together with delegates from all over the world.

Personal impressions of the award winners

"The HMUN was an incredible opportunity to not only develop my diplomatic skills, but also to gain new perspectives and make friends with participants from all over the world," reflected Luca. "The award is a great honor and motivates me to continue working on my skills."

Hala also shared her experience: "This conference showed me how important it is to communicate openly and respectfully with others in order to find common solutions. The award means a lot to me as it reflects the hard work we have put in as a team."

Appreciation of the teachers

Ms. Kolburan, another accompanying teacher, emphasized the importance of participation: "It was impressive to see the commitment and professionalism with which our student took part in the discussions. We are very grateful to have successfully represented our school at an international event. To experience this unique opportunity here in the UAE - for which other schools had to fly 15 hours - is a privilege. Luca and Hala have performed exceptionally well. We are extremely proud of all the participants."

More than an academic experience

The Harvard Model United Nations provided a platform for our students to acquire key skills that go far beyond the classroom.
