DISD students part of the groundbreaking ceremony of the German pavilion at EXPO 2020
Yallah! Es geht los! Let’s Go! The construction of the German pavilion on the EXPO 2020 grounds start now!
On Tuesday, April 16th, the traditional German „Spatenstich“-Ceremony took place and 10 DISD-students were part of it! The team of EXPO 2020 and Koelnmesse, who is responsible for the pavilion, had invited vice principal Dr. Sammy Wafi and ten students for 7a & 7b, who made their way from DISD to the school excitedly, together with secondary teacher Mrs Corinna von Häfen.
There, a EXPO employee took her time to explain the students the EXPO area with the help of a model. EXPO 2020 will be over 4 km² big, bigger than 600 football fields and will open on October 20 2020. The world exhibition will be focused on Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity and expects 25 million visitors, 2.5 the number of inhabitants of the UAE.
Before the beginning of the „Spatenstich“-Ceremony, all participants were brought in busses to the construction site, where our students took their place next to the speakers, equipped with German and UAE flags. This way, they were right next to the action. Firstly, German ambassador to the UAE, H.E. Ernst Peter Fischer welcomed the guests and praised the collaboration between the UAE and Germany. Then, Mr Najeeb Mohammed Al Ali, Executive Director, Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, explained the focus of the German pavilion, Sustainability, a topic Germany has been promoting for a long time. The Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, Mr Gerald Böse and General Commissioner of the German Pavilion, Mr Dietmar Schmitz, presented what the German pavilion CAMPUS GERMANY will include. Visitors will “enrol”, like at a university, and then embark on a curriculum that takes them through a Future Energy Lab, Future City Lab and a Biodiversity Lab to “graduate” at the end of the tour.
Then it was time for the main part: The four guests of honor revealed the construction site sign and then performed the “Spatenstich”, the first cut of the spade.
Afterwards, everyone met in the main office. Our students handed out press kits and notebooks to the guests and held interesting conversations with Mr Al Ali and Mr Böse. They were proud to be part of this event and are looking forward to the EXPO. Koelnmesse and the architects Lava and fast and fiction then gave a presentation on the details of CAMPUS GERMANY. Afterwards, everyone was enjoying a delicious buffet. For the students, it was important to take pictures with the team of the German pavilion and the German ambassador, H.E. Ernst Peter Fischer who talked to the students afterwards. Equipped with many new impressions, CAMPUS GERMANY T-Shirts, Buttons and note books, the students made their way back to DISD. The students and the participating teachers, Dr. Sammy Wafi and Mrs Corinna von Häfen, are looking forward to an exciting time at EXPO 2020 and are grateful for being part of this exciting event. Many thanks to the team of EXPO 2020 and CAMPUS Germany for a great day!
